Importing Intents

Prev Next

This article covers adding intents in bulk: from a question-and-answer list, from another virtual agent's utterances, or from a template. It is part of Virtual Agent. To create intents one by one, see Intents and Utterances.

The import menu

Every import and export starts from the caret next to New Intent on the intents page.

The New Intent caret menu with its six items

1. Add Intents from Template: Adds a prebuilt set of intents for the virtual agent's language.

2. Import Utterances of Agent: Adds intents and utterances from a CSV file, usually one exported from another virtual agent.

3. Export Utterances of Agent: Downloads every intent and its utterances as a CSV file.

4. FAQ - Download Template: Downloads the CSV template for an FAQ import.

5. FAQ - Import: Turns a question-and-answer file into intents, each with an action that gives the answer.

6. Save as Template: Saves this virtual agent's intents as a template of your own.

After any import, train the virtual agent again. See Training and Testing.

Importing an FAQ

An FAQ import turns each row of a file into one intent. The intent gets the row's question as its utterance and a Say action that gives the row's answer. All the new intents go into the Default group.

  1. Choose FAQ - Download Template. The template is a CSV file with the columns Intent, Utterance and Answer, separated by semicolons.
  2. Fill in one row per question and save the file as CSV with UTF-8 encoding.
  3. Choose FAQ - Import and select the file in Data File.
  4. To add more training sentences, turn on Generate Utterances with AI and set Number of Utterances for each intent: 1 to 10 (default: 5).
  5. Click Save.

A file for a weather service's FAQ looks like this:

Intent;Utterance;Answer severe_weather_alerts;How do I get severe weather alerts?;Turn on notifications in the app settings to receive alerts for your saved locations. forecast_update_times;How often is the forecast updated?;Forecasts are updated every hour.

The Import window states the rules the file must follow:

"Intent names must be unique, not duplicated. File format must be .csv UTF-8 and file must not exceed 1000 rows. The row limit decreases to 150 rows when using a third-party AI service. Please make sure there are no double quotation marks and semicolons in your sentences."

"Using a third-party AI service" means turning on Generate Utterances with AI. The intent names in the file must also be new to the virtual agent.

⚠️ Warning: An FAQ import replaces every intent created by earlier FAQ imports, including any utterances or action changes you made to them since. You are asked to confirm first ("Are you sure you want to import new FAQ set? Current FAQ will be deleted."). To add questions to an existing FAQ, add them to your last file and import the whole file again.

When an FAQ import is refused

Problem What to do
A field is empty on a line Fill in Intent, Utterance and Answer on that line.
The same intent appears on more than one line Give each row its own intent name.
An intent already exists in the virtual agent Rename the intent in the file.
Too many rows Shorten the file to 1000 rows, or 150 with Generate Utterances with AI. You cannot split it across imports, because a second import replaces the first.
Invalid header Start the file with the template's header line, Intent;Utterance;Answer.
Invalid file format Save the file as .csv with UTF-8 encoding.

Moving utterances between virtual agents

Export Utterances of Agent and Import Utterances of Agent copy training data from one virtual agent to another, in the same project or a different one.

The file is a comma-separated CSV with the columns IntentName and Utterance, one utterance per row:

IntentName,Utterance weather,Will it be windy in Antalya tomorrow? weather,What is the temperature outside right now?
  • Export includes every intent, welcome and fallback too.
  • Import only adds. An intent that already exists gains the utterances it does not have yet. An intent name the virtual agent does not know becomes a new intent in the Default group.

An import never deletes an intent or an utterance. The utterance file carries no actions or entities. To give imported intents an action, see Intent Actions.

Templates

Add Intents from Template offers prebuilt intent sets for the virtual agent's language, for example Banking, Ecommerce and Telecom. Templates exist for English, Turkish and Arabic.

  • You can pick one template at a time.
  • If an intent in the template has the same name as one of your intents, your intent gains the template's utterances. The template's other intents are added as new intents.

The same templates appear on the virtual agent's settings page, as described in Virtual Agent.

Save as Template saves this virtual agent's intents as a template of your own. It is refused if any intent's action uses a global entity or a SubFlow node.
